Haiti Earthquake: Chronicles of Inferno

The Republic of Haiti is a Caribbean country. It was the first independent nation in Latin America and the first black-led republic in the world. Despite these facts, Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. On January 12, 2010, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti and devastated the capital city of Port-au-Prince. Reportedly, more than 150000 people were killed and many buildings were destroyed and damaged in the quake. RT correspondent Aleksandr Luchaninov visited Haiti after the tragedy and here is his report. |

November 2008 Just over a year ago Haiti was last hit by disaster. It was brought to its knees by a series of hurricanes that left the struggling country in turmoil. Perpetually in a state of collapse, even without the disasters. In late 2008 Haiti is lashed by powerful storms, leaving many dead. That disaster resonates today. Chaos in Haiti as huge earthquake hits island

Hundreds are feared dead in Haiti after the strongest earthquake to hit the country in over two hundred years. The island, considered the poorest country in the Western hemisphere, is said to be suffering 'a catastrophe of major proportions.' Tens of thousands of people are now homeless after 7.0 magnitude quake and the Presidential Palace and the UN headquarters are in ruins.
