| Haiti Earthquake: Chronicles of Inferno
|
The Republic of Haiti is a Caribbean country. It was the first independent nation in Latin America and the first black-led republic in the world. Despite these facts, Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. On January 12, 2010, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti and devastated the capital city of Port-au-Prince. Reportedly, more than 150000 people were killed and many buildings were destroyed and damaged in the quake. RT correspondent Aleksandr Luchaninov visited Haiti after the tragedy and here is his report. |

| Disputes emerge over Haiti aid control
|
It is five days since a devastating earthquake struck Haiti, spreading fear and misery across an already fragile nation. After a relatively slow start, US forces appear to be taking the lead in organising international aid efforts on the ground. But there is a long way to go. Residents outside the capital complain they have been forgotten. In rural towns and villages survivors have largely been left to fend for themselves. Al Jazeera's Sebastian Walker reports from Port Au Prince, the capital. (Jan 17, 09) |

Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere and the poverty has fuelled restavek, a system of domestic servitude of hundreds of thousands of children that is tantamount to modern-day slavery. The country's government acknowledges that child slaves exist but says it is part of the culture. Al Jazeera's Teresa Bo reports. |

All of market and street footage was filmed in the streets of Port-au-Prince. My heart goes out to the people of Haiti during this time of great turmoil.
