Averting a Bust for the Boomers

Most discussion of the impending wave of Baby Boomers entering retirement age focuses on the capacity of entitlement programs to support them. Under-examined is the question of Boomers' abilities to support themselves and what policy changes might be necessary to help them do so. The ongoing instability in financial markets and its effect on the assets that many Boomers have planned to tap for retirement add to the uncertainty. Macroeconomic developments, workplace norms and existing policy barriers all make the most obvious short-term solution to the problem—working longer and saving more—more difficult than many imagine. With this as a backdrop, New America's Next Social Contract Initiative and the McKinsey Global Institute co-hosted, : The State of Retirement Preparedness and How to Improve It on June 5 at the US Capitol Building. The event featured the official release of, "Talkin' 'Bout My Generation: The Economic Impact of Aging US Baby Boomers."

Second Careers for Women Baby Boomers... Wendy Stevens two

http://www.CoachYouToSuccess.com Wendy Stevens Women Baby Boomers part 2 two The Characteristics of a Successful Boomer Woman Entrepreneur By Wendy Stevens What I'm about to tell you will surprise you. You may think that successful entrepreneurs are free-spirits who despise structure and are renegades who would rather work alone, only reluctantly hiring a team because there's no other choice. What it takes to break away from the good old W-2 and start your own venture is a curious mix. Forget about the idea that you have to learn how to do everything yourself. The successful entrepreneur is far from this Lone Ranger model of running a business. In my model of entrepreneurialism, it's what experts call a "Cash Machine" business, you get to strengthen your strengths and hire your weaknesses. Hiring the right people who will do what you can't or don't want to do is perhaps the one thing that differentiates a successful entrepreneur from one who simply moves from one job (working for someone else) to another job (working for him or herself). It's also a key difference between having a hobby and having a real business in which you earn a healthy income -- far better than what you're making at your current W-2 job! Here are the key characteristics that you'll want to have or cultivate in yourself: You must be the business owner. There's a lot of confusion about this characteristic, even amongst those I've coached. Being a business owner means that you take charge of your life. You begin running your life like a business, and run your business like you mean it. You must decide to take charge of every aspect of your life and business, leaving that shy, meek, "really nice person" behind. I don't mean that you have to become ruthless, but you do have to decide to be responsible and in charge. Courage. It takes a certain amount of courage to get up every day, day after day, and take full responsibility for old problems, new challenges, and the day-to-day struggles that always arise. Some days will be fantastic, and others may feel like the hardest days of your life. Regardless of any existing or new circumstances, you have the heart to stick with it, literally owning your vision, and having faith in your ability to succeed. Resourcefulness. While I recommend modeling your cash machine business after another successful business, not everything will be the same. Times and circumstances change, and you've got to change with them. Often this requires a certain resourcefulness to seek out new opportunities and find innovative solutions to challenges. It also means finding the right people to help you with each unique situation, rather than trying to figure out everything on your own. Resourcefulness really requires you to learn how to work well with others, seeking advice and guidance when necessary. Sequencing. This is often a tough concept for people to grasp. But it's really quite simple. The fastest route between two points is a straight line. I'm simply asking you to move in a straight line, taking each step as it comes, sequencing your activities so that you're doing the right things at the right time. Many entrepreneurs just shoot buckshot at problems, hoping that one will hit the target. You'll focus on taking the next right action, and following it with the action that's appropriate at that time. Persistence. Honestly, you have to stick to it. Sometimes you'll fail -- we all have. But when you are persistent, you'll learn from your experiences and will soon have far more successes than failures. Flexibility. Yes, you must be flexible. Be open to trying new things, but remain decisive. Flexibility isn't wishy-washy. It's being able to make a clear decision on a direction, but quickly make a new decision to change course if necessary. Stay in motion, because as soon as you start to fear failure, you'll lose your flexibility and get stuck in an endless downward spiral. As you can see, much of being a successful entrepreneur has to do with your psychology -- what you are inside. The good news is that everything I've mentioned can be developed, regardless of where you are today. But you must start today. Decide to be a millionaire entrepreneur. Boomeritis: Post modern Culture & a View of the Future

Boomeritis: a video montage of this post-modernism "disease", narrated by What Is Enlightenment? magazine's Tom Huston, from a retreat with Andrew Cohen Boomeritis, a term coined by philosopher Ken Wilber, describes a curious condition afflicting the baby boom generation. In short, "high cognitive pluralism mixed with low emotional narcissism." AKA: a smart, progressive person with a big ego. :-) It's a disease that began infecting human beings during the sixties revolution, when millions of rebellious American and European teens, took full advantage of the rights and freedoms afforded them by Western society and explored the entire spectrum of their egoic autonomy. Busting through every limitation, subverting every authority, and ingesting every psychedelic drug they could get their hands on, they each tumbled out, squinting and dazed, into the bright sunny dawn of the Age of Aquarius. And although that new age, obscured by the rose-colored glasses of hippiedom, wasn't all it was cracked up to be, it did mark the birth of an actual new stage of human consciousness and culture. Historians, sociologists, and philosophers call it postmodernity, and its defining characteristic was the capacity to allow a variety of differing viewpoints, cultures, and worldviews to peacefully coexist in an egalitarian embrace. Today this multicultural consciousness is also frequently called "pluralism" for its ability to honor and respect a multidimensional plurality of perspectives, and is recognized as being the singular fuel behind the revolutionary fire of the sixties—having ignited the flames of feminism, civil rights, animal rights, gay rights, ecological activism, Vietnam war protests, sexual liberation, and even rock 'n roll. The Beatles' song "All Together Now," for example, perfectly captures the fundamental sentiments and sensitivities of the pluralistic stage of development. But every social revolution has its downsides, and postmodernity had, and continues to have, plenty of its own. Perhaps the most obvious and unfortunate side-effect of postmodernity's noble intentions to include and embrace all worldviews and cultures—leaving no individual or social group behind to be marginalized or oppressed—is that by idealistically championing "equal rights," it ends up flattening all value judgments into an ultra-egalitarian pancake. Wilber has dubbed this postmodern landscape "flatland"—a world in which no value distinctions, no judgments, and no hierarchies are allowed, and in which it's considered "politically incorrect" to judge another person, group, or even worldview as being fundamentally better or worse than any other.
