President Bush caught in shoe attack in Iraq - 15 Dec 08

An Iraqi journalist has thrown his shoes at George Bush, the US president, in his last visit to Baghdad, shouting: "This is a goodbye kiss from the Iraqi people, dog."
One of the shoes narrowly missed the president's head and slammed into the wall behind him.
Nuri al-Maliki, the Iraqi prime minister, tried to block the second with his arm.
Throwing shoes at somebody is a supreme insult in the Middle East. |

Wütender Journalist wirft Schuhe
US-Präsident George W. Bush hat bei seinem Besuch in Bagdad den Kopf einziehen müssen: Ein irakischer Journalist hat wütend seine beiden Schuhe auf den Staatschef geworfen - ohne ihn jedoch zu treffen.
«Dies ist dein Abschiedskuss, du Hund», rief der Mann dabei. Der Zwischenfall ereignete sich nach einem Treffen Bushs mit dem irakischen Regierungschef Nuri al-Maliki. Wie ein Korrespondent der Nachrichtenagentur AFP berichtete, versuchte Maliki Bush mit seinen Händen zu schützen. Dass es sich um Schuhe der Grösse 44 gehandelt
habe, sei alles, was er zu dem Zwischenfall sagen könne, witzelte
Bush.
Der wütende Schuhwerfer wurde von Sicherheitsleuten weggebracht. Er ist ein Korrespondent des Senders Al Baghdadija.

An Iraqi reporter threw his shoes at visiting U.S. President George W. Bush and called him a "dog" in Arabic during a news conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki in Baghdad on Sunday.Muntadhar al-Zaidi, reporter of Baghdadiya television jumped and threw his two shoes one by one at the president, who ducked and thus narrowly missed being struck, raising chaos in the hall in Baghdad's heavily fortified green Zone."This is a farewell kiss, dog," said Zaidi.Several security members wrestled the man to the floor and then dragged him out of the hall as he was screaming.
However, Bush tried to show himself calm and said "all I can report is it is a size 10."
"I didn't feel the least threatened by it," Bush also said, adding that "it doesn't bother me" before he and Maliki leave the conference room.Earlier in the day, Bush arrived Baghdad in an unannounced visit, just 36 days before he leaves office in January.

L'uomo, portato via dalle forze di sicurezza, era seduto in terza fila e mentre i due leader si stringevano le mani davanti alle telecamere, si è alzato in piedi gridando rivolto a Bush «questo è il tuo bacio d'addio, cane» e lanciando subito dopo una scarpa dopo l'altra verso il presidente Usa.
Bush si è chinato per evitare la prima scarpa mentre la seconda l'ha evitata per un pelo. Il presidente ha tentato di sdrammatizzare l'accaduto ironizzando: «L'unica cosa che posso dirvi che si trattava di scarpe taglia 10 (una 42 in Italia, ndr)». Nella cultura islamica l'insulto «cane» con cui Bush è stato apostrofato dal giornalista è considerato uno tra i più pesanti perché quello che in occidente è considerato il miglior amico dell'uomo dai musulmani è visto come un animale impuro. Allo stesso modo essere colpito dalla suole delle scarpe è un altro affronto. Quando il 9 aprile del 2003 le truppe Usa entrarono a Baghdad abbattendo una grande statua di Saddam Hussein molti tra gli iracheni presenti si scagliarono sull'effigie del rais colpendola con le scarpe per sfregio.Il giornalista iracheno è stato individuato come Muntazer al-Zaidi del canale tv «Al-Baghdadia», di proprietà irachena ma diffuso dal Cairo. Altri giornalisti iracheni presenti nella sala si sono alzati in piedi per scusarsi con Bush che ha ringraziato minimizzando: «Vi ringrazio... ma in realtà non ho capito cosa volesse quel tizio».

Is Bush an "Idiot"?

Is the President of the United States, George W. Bush, an idiot? Scarborough Country asks the forbidden question. They look at his inability to speak correctly, not at his inability to lead correctly, however. Of course the real question is, is the Republican Party full of idiots because they nominated the sucker, and continue to blindly follow his crap? Is the US full of idiots, because they elected the sucker and have not begun demanding better until recently?
UPDATE: July 12, 2007. After 11 months this got 10,400 comments, most saying, yes, an idiot he is. Then things got ugly. Rightwing trolls came in with their usual garbage, as well as non-Americans who thought it would be fun to bait them. Then there were those who really did seem to be on the side of promoting harm to the US, as well as the loons with their conspiracy theories (9/11 was an inside job, Israel is behind it all, etc.)
So I shut down the comments, and archived the 2 mb's worth of text.
Ah, peace and quiet. Now all you are left with are your own thoughts, the anger, rants and insane babblings of a YouTube "discussion," and the question, "Is Bush an 'Idiot'?"
I'll reopen discussion with a tearful apology when Bush brings America to glory. |
