| Parliament's Christmas Tree
|
On Saturday 29 November 2008 Parliament put up their Christmas tree in New Palace Yard.
The tree was donated by the Forestry Commission and comes from the Kielder Forest in Northumberland, a sustainable forest in which trees are grown specifically for Christmas.
In January the tree will be recycled and sent to be chipped and used for composting. It stands 50 ft high and is decorated with 1000 LED lights. There is a star at the top that is new this year.

| RiP : A REMIX MANIFESTO
|
http://nfb.ca/webextension/rip-a-remix-manifesto
In RiP: A remix manifesto, Web activist and filmmaker Brett Gaylor explores issues of copyright in the information age, mashing up the media landscape of the 20th century and shattering the wall between users and producers.
The films central protagonist is Girl Talk, a mash-up musician topping the charts with his sample-based songs. But is Girl Talk a paragon of people power or the Pied Piper of piracy? Creative Commons founder, Lawrence Lessig, Brazil's Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil and pop culture critic Cory Doctorow are also along for the ride.
A participatory media experiment, from day one, Brett shares his raw footage at opensourcecinema.org, for anyone to remix. This movie-as-mash-up method allows these remixes to become an integral part of the film. With RiP: A remix manifesto, Gaylor and Girl Talk sound an urgent alarm and draw the lines of battle.
Which side of the ideas war are you on? |

| Big Buck Bunny

tells the story of a giant rabbit with a heart bigger than himself. When one sunny day three rodents rudely harass him, something snaps... and the rabbit ain't no bunny anymore! In the typical cartoon tradition he prepares the nasty rodents a comical revenge.

| Lively clashes at PMQs — Harman vs. Hague
|
Harriet Harman, Deputy Labour Leader, versus William Hague, Shadow Foreign Secretary, in the House of Commons on Wednesday April 2, 2008. Gordon Brown was in Russia somewhere for a meeting — I'm not sure where David Cameron was.
Harman is a well-known feminist and promoter of gender equality, so it's no wonder she countered Hague's comments about Margaret Thatcher so easily. More commentary about this at: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7326679.stm
Also, here is the blog entry on Harriet Harman's website that Hague was referring to: http://blog.harrietharman.org/2008/02/working-with-scottish-women-to-take-forward-the-battle-for-equality/ |

| Shift Happens UK
|
- Video
Karl Fisch, of Arapahoe High School in the US, conceived and created the first version of this presentation for a staff development day. And published it on the web via his website. He released it and gave permission for others to modify it under a Creative Commons licence.
Scott McLeod modified it, to make it more relevant to an audience in a wider context. And published it on the web with a Creative Commons licence
After conversations with Karl & Scott, I modified Scott's version to include UK-relevant content (it was quite US-centric)
And then Jeff Brenman, of Apollo Ideas, applied the creative design to Scott's version. And published it on the web via SlideShare where, incidentally, it won the competition for the "World's Best Slideshow"
And finally, with Jeff's permission, Ray Flemming modified his with the UK context. And published it on the web |

| Brown vs. Cameron during Queen's Speech debate
|
State Opening of Parliament. Closing remarks of Prime Minister Gordon Brown during the 2007 Queen's Speech debate with Leader of the Opposition David Cameron in a sceptical similar to PMQs (Prime Minister's Questions).
During the discussion, David Cameron refers to Brown in the first person, which is technically out-of-order in the House of Commons, but the Speaker doesn't do anything about it.
When asked by Cameron about inheritance tax Brown gives an immediate and direct answer, however he then evades the question about the election that never was. I wonder why? |

| The Machine is Us/ing Us (Final Version)
|
"Web 2.0" in just under 5 minutes.
http://mediatedcultures.net
This is a slightly revised and cleaned up version of the video that was featured on YouTube in February 2007.
I considered releasing it as an "eternal beta" in true Web 2.0 style, but decided to let it stand as is and start working on future projects. Many of my future videos will address the last 30 seconds of this video (the "rethink ..." part).
Thank you all for the helpful comments on the earlier draft. It has been a great experience to connect with so many people interested in
similar issues.
Once again, there are higher quality versions available for download:
Windows Media File (55 MB):
http://www.mediafire.com/?2wnmpy2ibz1
Quicktime File (96 MB):
http://www.mediafire.com/?axhbjnmw4yn
Mojiti Version (for comments, translations, etc.):
http://mojiti.com/kan/2743/5984
This work is licensed under a Creative Commons
Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 License. So you are welcome to download it, share it, even change it, just as long as you give me some credit and you don't sell it or use it to sell anything. I received many more positive comments than negative about the song choice (great work Deus!), but if you are one of those who does not like the song just download the video and change the audio track to your liking.
The video was created by me (Michael Wesch), working alone from my house in St. George, Kansas. I used CamStudio for the screen captures and Sony Vegas for the panning/cropping/zooming animations. Someday I might make a video tutorial for those who are interested. |
