| Design by the Book - Episode 2
|
The New York Public Library holds a wealth of unexpected sources of inspiration for artists and designers—from vintage valentines and textile patterns, to fabric samples and turn-of-the-century menus from around the world. For this online-only miniseries, "Design by the Book," the Library partnered with the leading design blog Design*Sponge to invite five New York City-based artists to sift through our collections in search of inspiration. Stay tuned for future episodes as the artists, who range from a glassblower to a letterpress printer, create unique works inspired by what they found; special guest Isaac Mizrahi will also join us to share his sources of inspiration. The artists are: Lorena Barrezueta, Rebecca Kutys, Mike Perry, John Pomp and Julia Rothman. Music by Clear Tigers. Visit www.nypl.org/research/chss/bythebook for more information. |

| National Design Awards 2008 - People's Design Award
|
The Zon Hearing Aid transforms the beige shapeless traditional hearing aid into a dynamic, sculptural object that ergonomically embraces the geometry of the ear while taking advantage of the latest technology to provide the highest audio quality. Most hearing impaired listeners wait up to eight years before being fitted with a hearing aid because of its perceived association with disability and weakness. The Zon turns the hearing aid into a coveted high-performance design object.
Cooper-Hewitt launched the Peoples Design Award in 2006 to give the public a voice on what they feel is good design. |

| Gotham: Barack Obama's favorite font
|
Can the right font make the difference in a media-driven election? Barack Obama's campaign is increasingly using the font Gotham for their "Change We Can Believe In" banners and other material. In this outtake from Gary Hustwit's 2007 documentary "Helvetica", type designers Jonathan Hoefler and Tobias Frere-Jones discuss the creation of Gotham. The font was originally commissioned for GQ Magazine, and the list of qualities they were looking for then sounds surprisingly Obama-esque now. http://www.helveticafilm.com/blog |

| Bioshock - All 3 Alternate Endings
|
Achieved depending on how you choose to play the game.
Edit (25/9/08) - Getting tired of the 'what's the difference' and 'there is no difference' remarks regarding Endings 2 and 3. Anyone with eyes can see that they are visually identical, however (as stated in the video between 2 and 3) there is a difference in the tone of narration, 2 is angry while 3 is sad. Anyone who is not deaf or does not have broken speakers should be able to pick up on this, otherwise you're lost mate! Ok fine this is a small difference and the designers could have probably put in more effort to distinguish them more, but nevertheless they are still different endings in their own right because they have been achieved by playing Bioshock in a different way. If you get the sad ending then you probably killed a few little sisters out of curiosity I don't know, so the narrator is sad that you gave in to temptation. But if you get the angry voice ending you have probably rampaged your way through killing every little sister you came across with a big smile on your face as you debate which plasmid you'll get next, so the narrator is angry that you have been so selfish and greedy. |
