Isaac Button - Country Potter (Extract)

Isaac Button was the last true English country potter. In a day, he could turn a ton of clay into pots. When timed he threw a lump of clay on to the wheel, pulled it high, then cut it off with wire in 22 seconds. In an hour, he could turn out 120 pots. In a day, 1,200.
Isaac Button died in 1969 and his kiln, at Soil Hill, near Halifax, now lies cold and desolate.
In his day, speed was essential. Even before the packaging revolution, household pots and jugs made from clay were treated as disposables. They cost only a few pence. Craftsmen potters had to be quick to earn a living from poorly-paid villagers. |

Holiday (1957) - extract
|
Few films have captured the kiss-me-quick pleasures of Blackpool more colourfully, energetically and convincingly than 'Holiday'. Made by British Transport Films, it chronicles a day in the life of this most British of seaside resorts as it's invaded by people hell-bent on getting the most fun possible from their precious holidays.
It is certainly no chaste and po-faced trip. Among the candy floss and donkey rides the camera spies canoodling lovers; it lingers over near-naked flesh; captures some very suggestive shellfish-eating and offers images that must be among the most homoerotic in British cinema of the 1950s.
Cinematographer David Watkin (who sadly died on 19 February 2008) achieved this level of intimacy by hiding his camera away from prying eyes under a cardboard box on the top of his van, presumably not worrying too much whether or not his subjects ever got round to signing release forms. Piccadilly (1929) - extract
|
With its stunning production design and photography, 'Piccadilly' depicts London through an otherworldly cocktail of influences, blending the debauchery of the rich West End set with the sleazy excitement of a Limehouse dive bar and the city's smoky Chinese quarter.
German émigré E.A. Dupont, who brought an international flair to late-'20s British cinema, also tackles the then risqué subject of inter-racial sex. As Shosho, who works her way from kitchen hand to star attraction at the eponymous nightclub, via a love tryst with its (attached) owner, Chinese-American star Anna May Wong represents the ultimate, and ultimately doomed, Deco diva.
