This is my arrangement of the traditional Hebrew song, "Artza Alinu" (We Ascend to the Land), perfomed on a replica of the ancient 10-string Jewish Temple Lyre; the Biblical "Kinnor"...once played by my very own, very ancient Levite ancestors over 2000 years ago in the Temple of Jerusalem, to accompany the legendary singing of the Levitical Choir!
The design of my replica lyre is of the Second Temple Era - the design is based on illustrations of this lyre found on many ancient Jewish coins from the time of the Bar Kochba Revolt against the Roman occupation of Israel (please see the photo on my album cover, which can be seen on my Youtube Channle Page).
The tranliteration of the words of this song from Hebrew and the translation into English are as follows:
Artza alinu,
kvar charashnu vegam zaranu,
aval od lo katzarnu.
We ascended to the land,
we've already ploughed and sown too,
but we have not yet reaped. |

This is my arrangement of the mezmorizing Jewish Klezmer melody, "Firn Di Mekhutonim Aheym"(Escorting the Parents of the Bride & Bridegroom"),composed by the legendary Klezmer clarinetist Naftule Brandwein in 1923AD...perfomed here on my replica of the ancient Jewish Temple Lyre, of about 1923 BC!!

This totally unique, enchanting, meditative and spiritually uplifting album, consists of an amazing selection of ancient traditional Jewish songs, mystical Shabbat melodies and exhilarating Jewish Klezmer music, all arranged and performed on my replica of the ancient Jewish "Kinnor" Lyre - the Lyre once played by King David himself, 3000 years ago, as he danced before the Ark of the Covenant; and later, during the actual time of Jesus, the Kinnor was played by my very own, very ancient Levite ancestors over 2000 years ago, to accompany the almost legendary singing of the Levitical Choir in the Temple of Jerusalem...
Jewish Mysticism is more popularly known as Kabbalah; according to the Kabbalists, each of the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet has a unique, transcendental and spiritual significance - therefore, I decided to record 22 tracks for this album; to match each of the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet.

Epic of Gilgamesh with 4500-year-old Lyre (extract)
|
A performance of part of the Epic of Gilgamesh. This piece uses the newly-reconstructed and completed Lyre of Ur, which was found in a grave in ancient Mesopotamia.
The original instrument was destroyed when the Baghdad museum was looted, and this reconstruction uses original materials - gut strings, pink sandstone, lapis lazuli, gold. The string tuning is based on pipes which were found in the same grave, and which appear in another video extract which we'll upload shortly.
Andy Lowings reconstructed the Lyre with the help of an international team, and the extract you see here is performed by Bill Taylor and Jennifer Sturdy - Jennifer wears a headress and jewellery based on contemporary designs, also trimmed with gold.
This video is a taste of a series of music, dance and performance being written especially for this instrument, which is gaining great interest in the academic and music world.

I made this video as part of my own contribution to the project. I used Neumann mics into a Soundcraft mixer, with Sony widescreen video cameras, and edited it on Adobe Premiere pro. I hope you enjoy the video!
