Oblivion voices by Ibsen's Ghost - Part 4

Voice acting can be no joke! Its not just a case of squeaking, screaming or growling into a microphone and there is a bigger drop-out rate for games-based voice actors than anything Ive ever seen. We get pilloried for bad work and laughed at purely because it can be pretty low-key e.g. can you imagine your claim to fame being the voice of the adoring fan of Oblivion? What are you going to tell your kids?
Id love to do drama work or book readings but the openings generally only come for those with connections. Instead, games VAs are forced to do their work from a one-sided script about a mod they never heard of. 98% of my work comes from receiving only my own characters lines with no response, no context, no background story and no character detail providedunless you bombard the modder with questions that they often cant answer even for themselves. My favourite stuff is always that which I can write myselfand writing was always my first love.
Added to that are the physical and technical demands. Argonians make me feel dizzy, Khajiits destroy my throat, and even with careful preparation and care, you can end up out of action for days. Thankfully, the good Lord has given us Audacity software. I began with basic Microsoft stuff and went all the way up to professional software like Soundforge but nothing compares to the beautiful simplicity of Audacity. The rest of my kit is so basic that Im not even prepared to tell you about it. Suffice to say that Audacity, barring some bizarre sudden, stark onsets of noise on occasion, is the business.
The worst symptom of voice acting addiction is the freak factor. Try explaining to your folks or housemates or partner that youre really not angry with them, that youre not upset and that you do not have multiple personality disorder and that you actually really enjoy uttering oddities at your computer for the sake of someone elses pleasure and creativityand theyll never look at you the same way again.
The whole thing is made tolerable by modders who are either a) passionate about the game, b) restlessly creative or c) like me, interested in seeing what interactive narrative might really mean. I can vouch for all of my modder friends that theyre committed, highly technically-competent, organised, passionate and generally all-round good-eggs bobbing on a vast sea of orrible flamer sharks who have absolutely zero understanding of the work they put in and what they are each individually striving to achieve.
But there is still fun to be had for those who commit. I love unusual voices. I love the different inflections that people from other places put on phrases. I love accents and textures and get really frustrated if I cant replicate something Ive heard as best as possible. I generally dont do impressions which I find boring and quite nerdy. Its in making characters and imagining what their thinking and feeling that the pleasure is derived because then a part of it is your own experiences. And finally, I have loved working with people from a global gaming community. Kudos to you all!

Halo Custom Edition - Surf Mod

Basic Information:
Today, September 7th 2008, E3pO & Modder Central are proud to present to you the very first Halo Custom Edition Surf map. The idea of having a Halo Surf Mod came from when I first played on Counterstrike-Source, and then furthered me wanting to try it when Team Fortress 2 surf maps came popular. Late Friday night I decided to test it out on Halo Custom Edition. It failed miserably. After several hundred attempts and failing, i came across something that kinda worked. I tested it over and over again making improvements to the code one try after another. This is how Surf_beta_e3po came to life.
Servers:
As you may already know, there is going to be a 24\7 Surf server online for anybody that wants to try out the latest versions of user-created surf maps. The server info is as follows.
Server IP: ts.wmclan.net:2303
Server Name: :: Surf 24\7 :: E3pO's Surf Server
You can join it at anytime; keep an eye out for the latest surf maps so you don't get kicked from the server for not having a map. An official supported surf map list will be available on the main page of my website, http://wmclan.net/ , there should be a link on the top of the page by the end of tomorrow night (September 8th, 2008).

Other Information:
There are still many bugs in the way it works, one of which is you can't jump off a flat surface and still have the (TOP SECRET) attribute effecting your player, I will hopefully code this in sometime tomorrow after school(September 8th, 2008).
Creating your own maps:
It's very simple to make a surf map; even a noob can do it! I will be posting a "how to make a surf map" tutorial later tonight (September 7th, 2008). When you play the test map you will pretty much understand how a ramp needs to be made, if you play games like Counterstrike-Source, or Team Fortress you probably have played on a surf server. The maps are basically the same thing, and the concept is exactly the same. Basically you're making a ramp, and then another one, and another one, and a teleport, and then another one. It's that simple! We're always looking for people to join the surf mapping team, so feel free to join at anytime! All you need to do is contact surf@wmclan.net about wanting to join, and we will get back with you as soon as possible.
